Sobriety calculator
Enter the date you stopped. You get the exact time in years, months and days, the dates your milestones fall on, and what you haven't spent. It works out the answer in your browser and keeps nothing.
How the count works
Dates are calendar dates, so there are no time zones or clock times to worry about. The number of days is the difference between the two dates. Years and months are whole calendar steps from the start date, and the days left over are what remain after that, so 31 January to 28 February is 28 days, and 1 March to 1 April is one month.
Programs differ on whether to call the first day “day 1” or “day 0”. Neither is wrong. Use whichever feels right to you.
Questions
How many days sober am I?
Enter your sobriety date and leave “Count up to” empty to use today. You get the number of days, and the same time in years, months and days. To find the date you reach 100 days, or any other number, fill in the last box.
Do I count the day I stopped as day one?
This calculator treats your sobriety date as day 0, so the first full day after it is day 1 and the anniversary falls on the same date a year later. That's how most recovery programs mark time. If you prefer to count the first day as day 1, add one.
How are months and years worked out?
By the calendar, not by dividing days. From 3 March to 3 June is exactly 3 months, even though the number of days varies. Leap years are handled.
How is money saved calculated?
Your typical weekly spend, divided by seven, times the days you've counted. It's a rough guide, not a record, and it ignores what you might have spent anyway.
Does this calculator save my date?
No. With JavaScript on, the answer is worked out in your browser and the dates never leave it. With it off, the form sends them to our server in the address bar to work it out, and we don't store them. To keep a running counter, use the one on the home page.
